Ryan McWhorter, M.D.

Dr. Ryan McWhorter is on a mission to solve the toughest health challenges with real solutions beyond symptom management. With over 25 years of experience, he combines ancient healing wisdom with cutting-edge technology to help patients reclaim their health and well-being. His holistic approach provides a path to freedom from chronic pain, fatigue, and deeper issues that are often overlooked by traditional medicine.

Dr. McWhorter works with a wide range of health concerns, including chronic illness, low energy, hormone imbalances, gut health, and heart health. However, his true passion lies in helping women overcome some of the most complex pelvic health conditions, like vulvodynia, severe period pain, infertility, urinary incontinence, and sexual pain.

  • Mia Gentle

    Mia Gentle, RN, MSN, NP-C

    Nurse Practitioner

    Mia Gentle is a board-certified Nurse Practitioner who specializes in Adult and Family Medicine. With 30 plus years of experience, Mia’s special areas of interest are preventative medicine, women's wellness, hormone replacement, anti-aging, and thyroid disease. She believes strongly in empowering patients with knowledge, developing a partnership in identifying root causes of health concerns, and forming a plan that includes personalized integrative protocols and holistic modalities.

    Mia is passionate about her faith, family, and fitness. She enjoys spending time with her 4 children, selling real estate, and is an Ironman All World Athlete. She recently came in first place in a marathon in Aruba. Our favorite quote about Mia is, "Wow, she thinks just like Dr. McWhorter!"

  • Leslie Jones, BSN, RN

    Leslie Jones, BSN, RN

    Clinical Director

    Leslie graduated from Auburn University with her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and has more than 14 years of experience in Pediatric Nursing, Clinical Education, Nursing Management, and Functional Medicine. She is trained in Electrodermal Screening and in the administration of 10-Pass Ozone Therapy. After healing from Lyme Disease through functional medicine and 10-Pass Ozone Therapy, Leslie became determined to support others in the same way. She desires to help our patients reach an optimal level of health and achieve the life-changing results that she has experienced.

    Leslie enjoys spending her spare time with friends and family and going on adventures with her wonderful husband Caleb.

  • Starla Lowery

    Starla Lowery

    Receptionist

    Starla serves as our receptionist. An interest in health and wellness brought her to Alabama Functional Medicine, first as a patient, then as a team member. She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. Prior to coming to work at Alabama Functional Medicine, she enjoyed a 29-year career as an elementary school teacher. Starla finds it rewarding to support Dr. McWhorter and the AFM team as they work together to solve our patients toughest problems.

    When not working, you’ll most likely find Starla spending time with her husband, John, and her son, Ben. She loves spending time near the water (lake, pool or beach!) and curling up by the fire with a good book.

    Donna Waldrop

    IASIS MCN and HOCATT Ozone Sauna Technician

    Donna is a dedicated and empathetic technician with over 18 years in direct patient care and office management experience. She is a certified technician for both IASIS MCN and HOCATT Ozone Sauna Therapy. Donna loves working at Alabama Functional Medicine because she has a passion to be a part of a practice that seeks to discover the root cause of issues and equips patients to have an optimal quality of life.

    Donna met Dr. McWhorter when he was 15 years old in their church youth group. She is a mother of two grown, married daughters and the grandmother of three. She enjoys spending time with her family, sewing, monogramming and reading.

    Kelcie Yockachonis, RN, CRRN

    Nurse; Medical Therapies

    Kelcie graduated from Southern Union State Community College with her Associates Degree of Science in Nursing in 2018. Since graduating, Kelcie has furthered her education by acquiring certifications from: the Wound Care Education Institute, The Rehabilitation Nursing Certification Board, the Institute of Integrative Nutrition, and the International Association of Health Coaches. She has been interested in functional and alternative forms of medicine since high school, and she loves helping patients achieve their health goals for a long, happy life. In addition to creating care plans for patients to feel their best, Kelcie’s main role is administering 10-Pass Ozone Therapy, IV Vitamin C, and other nutritional IVs.

    Kelcie's husband is a trained chef who enjoys cooking for her. Together they like to work out, go mountain biking and spend time with their 3 dogs.

  • Pam Lowe

    Pam Lowe, RN

    Nurse; Medical Therapies

    Pam is a registered nurse with 25 plus years of operating room experience. After following functional medicine for 18 years, Pam landed her “dream nursing job” here at Alabama Functional Medicine. She thoroughly enjoys helping people become their best self, and continually learning new information that she can share with patients.

    Pam’s interests outside of the office are her granddaughters, gardening, and reading.
